December 2021 Malaysian Floods: We Need Your Help

Dear FlyKLIA readers, we are here to request for your help with regards to the December 2021 Malaysian floods which is one of the worst disasters to hit Malaysia in many years. According to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), the floods were so bad that they have displaced 62,999 persons across 33 districts in 8 states, with over half of that number from Pahang alone at 34,924 victims. Here are some of the verified NGOs and fundraisers that you can contribute to in order to provide relief to the victims of the December 2021 Malaysian floods.

Malaysian Relief Agency

Who are they?

True to its name, the Malaysian Relief Agency was set up to provide aid for people in need since 2010. They have helped countless people both locally and internationally, including the floods in Kedah (2010) and Kelantan (2014–2015), the tsunami and earthquakes in Indonesia (2010), Japan (2011) and Nepal (2015), and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020.

Uncle Kentang

Who are they?

Kuan Chee Heng, better known as “Uncle Kentang” by Malaysians, is an activist and humanitarian volunteer. He got his nickname from donating potatoes to the poor without giving his name, so the people ended up simply calling him “Uncle Kentang”. He recently received the Commonwealth Point of Light award from Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his efforts.

How can you help?

Malaysian Red Crescent Society

Who are they?

The Malaysian Red Crescent Society has a history of over 70 years beginning in 1948. It is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing humanitarian aid and is part of the global network of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. Among the services they provide are ambulance services and disaster management services as well as first aid training.

MyCARE

Who are they?

Humanitarian Care Malaysia Berhad, also known as MyCARE, is a non-profit organisation that combined six separate humanitarian agencies which had previously operated independently. Its humanitarian relief network covers many Southeast Asian countries and war-torn countries in the Middle East. They have been recognised by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the United Nation’s Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for their transparency and integrity in managing funds.

How can you help?

MyCARE is seeking donations for food (RM50), necessities for women and infants (RM100), as well as post-flood recovery assistance (RM100).

MERCY Malaysia

Who are they?

MERCY Malaysia is a non-governmental organisation which was established in 1999 as the Malaysian Medical Relief Society by Dr Jemilah Mahmood in response to the plight of innocent civilians of the Kosovo War. Since then, the organisation has provided humanitarian assistance and programmes across 32 countries in both crisis and non-crisis situations.
