Lamb lovers would find this a haven that would satisfy their lamb cravings with dishes from lamb satay to lamb biryani, while their grilled lamb is not to be missed either. One could even order a large platter of grilled lamb for RM120! 6. Jala—fresh seafood straight from the source

The Andaman

Jala is an al fresco restaurant in The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort. It has a spectacular view overlooking the Andaman Sea, and the floor of the restaurant is actually covered in soft golden sands; you’re meant to leave your footwear on the rack at the entrance to allow your feet to feel the warm texture. Their Daily Fresh Seafood section lists the catch of the day, carefully curated by Chef Rene Knudsen from the fishermen’s hauls right off the boat that very morning. One could choose from the list and then select a sauce and sides to go with the seafood, which Chef Rene would then prepare fresh on the spot. Their dinner menu contains non-seafood options as well, including vegetarian items like eggplant cannelloni. They have a signature dish called the Jalaksa, which is their take on the traditional Malaysian laksa. On Fridays, they have the Fisherman’s Night Buffet Dinner.

Address: The Andaman
Jalan Teluk Datai
07000 Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia

Opening hours: 6pm–10:30pm (closed on Mondays; Fisherman’s Night Buffet Dinner starts at 7pm)

5. The Gulai House—fine dining in the heart of the rainforest

The Gulai House

The Gulai House is part of The Datai Langkawi, a 5-star luxury resort. That’s not the impressive part. What makes it really stand out is that it’s not only located deep within the rainforest together with the rest of The Datai, it is a wholly local aesthetic. The building is in the style of a traditional Malay kampung house, and the furnishing and interior decor are all very rustic to give it that all-natural, Old World feel. You are given the option of floor seating in the traditional Malay style, and regardless of how you choose to dine, you can listen to the sounds of the rainforest wildlife as you taste the Jungle Bird, a truly made-in-Malaysia cocktail. The menu largely focuses on Indian and Malay food, while vegetarians and vegans won’t have to worry as they also have a number of items to choose from. In December 2014, The Gulai House won Best F&B Outlet at the Langkawi Tourism Awards organised by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA). Compared to all the other restaurants in Langkawi, dining here is not a frugal affair, but if you can afford it, this is definitely an experience not to be missed.

Address: The Datai Langkawi
Jalan Teluk Datai
07000 Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia

Opening hours: 6:30pm–10:30pm
Phone: +604-950 0500

4. The Fat Frog Langkawi—meat-optional vegetarian gratification

The Fat Frog Langkawi

Unlike most of the entries in this list, The Fat Frog specialises in healthy vegan and vegetarian meals, and they would happily accommodate meat-eaters with chicken or seafood to add to the dishes. They also have a daily special that ensures a pleasant surprise with each visit. Their vegetables are grown right in their garden, so you can be sure that their meals are as fresh as can be! As green as their meals can get, the same could be said about the environment around the restaurant, as one has a nice view of the 99 East golf course from the open air dining area, and an airconditioned wine room with its own private courtyard that offers the largest independent wine list in Langkawi. Oh, and you cannot miss their friendly furry host, Monty the dog!

100 Jalan Padang Matsirat

3. Wonderland Food Store—highly-recommended for Chinese-style seafood

Wonderland Food Store

The only way to get fresher seafood in Langkawi is to dive down into the sea and catch sea creatures with your mouth. One of the best seafood restaurants in Langkawi is Wonderland Food Store, a Chinese seafood restaurant that can cook seafood such as lobsters and crabs in a variety of methods and sauces like Teochew style, sweet & sour, and tom yam. While some of the dishes are priced based on portions, most of the seafood such as fish and prawns are priced by the pound, and the prices here are very competitive.

Address: 179–181, Persiaran Mutiara 2, Pusat Perdagangan Kelana Mas
07000 Langkawi, Kedah

Opening hours: 6pm–11pm
Phone: +6012-470 7687

2. fatCUPID—Peranakan passion

The passion of three cousins inspired by their Nyonya grandmother gave rise to this restaurant located in the award-winning La Pari-Pari Langkawi. Run by Jacky, Jeremy & Keith, this restaurant specialises in Nyonya food as befits their heritage, a historical hybrid of Chinese and Malay culture that has resulted in unique flavours. The chef, Keith, also specialises in Australian cooking, so their menu is extensive enough to offer western, vegetarian and even vegan options.

Address: La Pari-Pari
2273 Jalan Teluk Baru Kampung Tasek Anak, Pantai Tengah
07000 Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia

The Cliff Langkawi

If you like the beauty of Cenang Beach, you will love the view from The Cliff Langkawi, a restaurant situated atop a cliff—hence the name—overlooking Cenang Beach with an amazing view all around, even from the washrooms! They have an excellent variety of food with vegetarian-friendly options, and they also have a bar, D’Reef, where one could call for cocktails to sip on while taking in the seaside breeze and the sunset view.
