MATTA Fair 2022 at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur

MATTA Fair 2022 at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur

Mention the words “MATTA Fair” and Malaysians can tell you what this means: sales and discounts on travel and tourism packages! The world has been hit by the COVID-19 global pandemic, but as more and more countries are reopening their borders, including Malaysia, we are ready to travel once more. The MATTA Fair comes at just the right moment when Malaysia has reopened its borders on 1 April 2022, so those of us who are already fully vaccinated no longer have to be quarantined when entering or re-entering Malaysia. So let’s take a closer look into what MATTA is, what you should look out for at MATTA Fairs, and what we can expect from MATTA Fair 2022.

What is MATTA?

MATTA stands for Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents. As the full name suggests, it is an association that is made up of local tour and travel organisations, as well as overseas affiliations. Since their start in 1975, they have steadily built up a solid reputation as an association that represents the interests of tour and travel agents, and as of April 2022, they boast a membership of over 3,400. Being an association of tour and travel agents, they have a close working relationship with the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB) and Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC). Although they organise seminars, conventions and workshops to create public awareness of the tourism industry and also benefit their members, MATTA is most popularly known for the MATTA Fair, which is an annual event that many Malaysians look forward to due to all the special promotion packages one can find for tours to destinations both local and overseas. When COVID-19 hit Malaysia in 2020, MATTA took the brunt as MATTA Fair 2020 had to be cancelled, but they have set up MATTA Fair Online with over a thousand holiday and tour packages offered. In November 2021, MATTA went back to having a physical presence at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, and based on the success of the last two-day event, MATTA Fair 2022 will be held at the same venue on 9 & 10 April 2022.

MATTA Fair Tips

MATTA Fairs are known for providing great offers and discounts that can save travellers from RM200 all the way to thousands of ringgit. If that sounds too good to be true, you’ll have to see those packages for yourself to judge, but of course, there’s always a catch or several.

Always read the fine print

As with any contract or offer, you should always pay attention to the fine print to check for conditions that you may or may not be informed of, such as twin sharing (meaning you may have to stay with a stranger in the same room if you’re travelling alone for this package), the number of days and nights (whether some of those “days” will be spent at the airport instead of your tour destination), etc.

Find the hidden Mickeyextra charges

It is very tempting to jump at an unbelievably cheap tour package, but do take note in the details whether you would be required to pay certain surcharges, such as drivers’ tips, arrival taxes at certain countries (you’ll be charged a US$100 ‘Visa on Arrival’ fee once you arrive in Antigua, for example), hotel taxes, activity fees, etc. Since COVID-19 testing is still mandatory in many countries, do check to see if the package includes the costs of the necessary RT-PCR, RTK-Ag or other mandated tests.

Check the (blackout) dates

You have to make sure that the dates for the tour package you are interested in would include the dates you are planning to travel, as many cheap tour packages often have “blackout dates” that exclude major holidays and peak travel seasons.

See what’s included (and what’s not)

As with the hidden charges, sometimes you might even note that return flights are not provided, so you would have to arrange your own flights were you to take the package offered. Check to see if all meals are included, or else you would have to either fork out unexpected expenses or go hungry. You should also check to see if the fees for the activities, such as zoo entrance tickets, are covered. One keyword you should look out for is “optional” which usually means the price for the activity is not included and you will have to pay extra to, say, ride a hot air balloon in Cappadocia, Turkey.

Do your own research

Last but not least, you should do your own research to see if the offers make sense. Some packages might try to inflate the amount of savings by including things like photo books, souvenirs or other extras that you don’t really need. Try setting up your own itinerary and see if the costs match up. If you would be flying to a distant country, check if the flights are direct, or if the agency has provided a cheaper flight at the cost of lengthy layovers in between. During this time, it is also important to check to see what COVID-19 measures have been set up by the government of the country you are travelling to, whether you would be required to quarantine (and the associated quarantine fees), additional COVID-19 testing, etc.

MATTA Fair 2022 Expectations

Since we have now entered the “Transition to Endemic Phase” since 1 April 2022, the 50% capacity for all venues requirement has been abolished, so expect people to fill the halls, especially when tourists from overseas would also have the opportunity to participate since the borders have been reopened. Last year’s MATTA Fair in November filled the hall with 256 booths and 70 exhibitors in total. They received close to 15,000 visitors and had a sales turnover of RM30 million which, while failing to hit the target of 25,000 visitors, went beyond the sales target of RM25 million. MATTA Fair 2022 is expected to welcome over 100,000 visitors from Malaysia and the rest of the world. According to the floor plan for MATTA Fair 2022, the booths are carefully arranged according to regions, so if you have a particular place in mind to travel to, you don’t have to waste your time scrambling from one end of the hall to the other to compare different offers for the same location. Still, it would definitely be worthwhile to visit all of the booths to see if any of their displays might catch your eye and inspire your next trip.

What will you be looking forward to at MATTA Fair 2022? Do you have any place in particular that you are looking for promos of? Let us know in the comments if you have found any worthwhile deals at the fair!
