September, for me, is one of the best times of the year to go on a holiday. In the northern hemisphere, summer is just about ending, which means the heat is starting to go away to welcome in clear, warm skies, and in the southern hemisphere, the cold is just about over, as we welcome in the spring season.
With that being said, here are some of the best places (in my opinion) to go in September.
- Cusco, Peru

With little rain and cooling weather (22ºC), September is a nice time to visit Cusco, Peru for some sightseeing or exploration of the Inca Empire as your course through its delicate architecture. Although the weather will be cooling during daytime, at night, it can get really cold, so be sure to bring your jacket along.
- Lisbon, Portugal

In general, Lisbon is a great place to visit, with the Lisbon Story Center and the Natural History Museum for those curious minds. But of course, the main reason to visit Lisbon in September is the fish! The grilled fish is unlike any other you’ve had! There are a couple of places where you can get great fish, like in Cascais, which used to be a fishing village, or perhaps Costa da Caparica, which is located near a river.
- Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich has its own hidden treasures that makes it worth visiting. One of which I find interesting is the Rosenhofmarkt. It’s a marketplace that sells anything from Native American silver jewellery to Indian handicrafts and hand-woven scarves. If you’re lucky, you might find some really good items out on a bargain. You can also head over to Horn Richterswil, which is a large park located right at Lake Zurich. Remember all the times you see a lake and are told you can’t swim in it? Well, with this lake, you can, because it doubles as a swimming pool, and they host cool annual events like funfairs, beach parties as well as an outdoor cinema.
- Napa Valley, California
September is harvest season in the Napa Valley, and you know what that means! Wine! Napa Valley boasts over 400 wineries, making it a wine connoisseur’s paradise. With that being said, there will be tons of wine tasting parties going around. Of course, entry would require you paying a small sum, but trust me, it will be worth it!
- Budapest, Hungary

September is a host to many events in Budapest, including the Budapest International Wine Festival, Belgian Beer Festival, Budapest Chocolate Festival, the National Gallop, Ujbuda Jazz Festival Budapest, Baroque Music Festival Budapest as well as the International Half Marathon. Most of these Festivals happen early to mid September, aside from the Jazz Festival. So if you wanna live the life of party and events, Budapest is the place to be in September!
- Santorini, Greece
The September weather in Santorini makes for a good ol’ relaxing vacation, just lazing by the beach, gazing at the beautiful sunset and breathtaking views, and just plain chilling in wineries and bars. If you’re looking for a place to fully immerse in the experience, you can plan your visit in Fira, the capital of Santorini. To go to the beach you’ll still have to drive 20-30 minutes, but you’ll get all the views right from Fira.
- Cotswolds, England

For photography (or even selfie) lovers, Cotswolds presents unique sceneries unlike many others. It looks like a humble village, housing log cabins and fresh, locally grown food aplenty. For photo-ops, the local elemental sculpture park has an interesting collection of sculptures spread around a park that has been transformed from a wild thistle field into a woodland with ponds, gardens, and glades. If you’re feeling especially lucky, the lake produces mist early in the morning as it loses its summer heat, which makes for a beautiful photograph.
So, what are you waiting for? Pack up your bags for an amazing September ahead!
